Course Description
The establishment of rule of law and the development of a functioning Justice system and authorities adhering to basic rule of law principles are critical to a successful peace process. Thus, rule of law responsibilities are today included in the mandate and work of many ongoing peace operations. A number of other international, regional and national actors are also engaged in rule of law work across the world. Police officers, judges, prosecutors, correctional officers and other legal experts therefore will have an important role in (re-)establishing rule of law in post-conflict and developing countries.
The course will cover different aspects of rule of law, and describe how international organisations work with it by using examples from both past and present missions. The course will also discuss different methods and tools for how to work efficiently with rule of law issues and problems.
The objective of the course is to provide the participants with knowledge needed in a rule of law mission or a rule of law component of a more comprehensive peace mission, and the skills necessary to perform well in a crisis environment. The course combines lectures, seminars, case studies, and simulations.
The Academy also has the capacity to provide tailor-made courses within Rule of Law.
Participants
Approximately 25 legal professionals with some years of relevant work experience. International experience in the legal field is an advantage. Preference will be given to persons who just started working or are scheduled to work in a rule of law mission.
