Dialogue and mediation are voluntary processes where multiple stakeholders to a conflict, facilitated by a third party, aim at reaching an agreement that is mutually satisfactory. When a solution is found through a participatory process of common learning, it has the potential to increase the sustainability and legitimacy of the result, to create non-violent conflict-resolution mechanisms for the future, and lead to changes in attitudes towards “the other”, thereby improving the relations between the parties. This is crucial if the goal is not limited to preventing violent incidents but rather to aim at creating resilient societies capable of handling future conflict. The purpose of this course is to contribute to the development of capacities which transform conflict by peaceful means. The main focus of the course will be on skills-building in facilitation of dialogue and mediation processes, taking participants through the different phases of such processes. This includes elements of process design, conflict analysis, and values-based leadership. The highly interactive course is partly based on specific cases and includes group discussions, role plays as well as personal and group reflections. Different feedback methods will be used, actively involving both resource persons and participants. The course is a full 5-day course with arrival on May 26 and departure on June 1
Participants
The approximately 25 participants should be representatives from national and local governments, international, intergovernmental, regional, sub-regional and civil society organizations, police or military personnel, as well as local stake-holders, who play, or have the potential to play, a role in preventing or transforming violent conflict. This composition will enable the participants to acquire an overview of dialogue and mediation processes and understand differences in roles and mandates. Moreover, the course aims to provide a space where inter-personal and institutional networks can be strengthened.
