Over the past decade Security Sector Reform (SSR) has emerged as one of the key areas in which to assist post-conflict and fragile states. A security sector with focus on human security is critical in promoting sustainable peace, rule of law and good governance and thus preventing countries from entering, or relapsing, into conflict.

In this course, which has been developed by the Folke Bernadotte Academy, the participants will acquire an understanding of the definitions of SSR and how the concept has developed. Academic lecturers and experienced practitioners will provide theoretical skills and practical case studies to illustrate the comprehensive process of SSR. Several key technical areas and specific program approaches will be explored, recognizing the holistic approach needed in SSR. The challenges and opportunities arising in post-conflict situations will be analysed, bearing in mind the importance of both sustainability and political ownership..
As co-learning is an essential part of this course, participants are expected to share experience and knowledge. Interchange of experiences and lessons learned are vital parts of the course.
A group of approximately 25 persons, from a broad variety of professions and organizations, will work together during this 5 day course.
