Course on Rule of Law, 12-23 November 2012 in Sandö, Sweden
Planned and Conducted in Cooperation with Zentrum für Internationale Friedenseinsätze (ZIF)
Background and Scope
The establishment of the rule of law, the development of a functioning Justice System, as well as authorities adhering to basic rule of law principles is critical to a successful peace process. Thus, rule of law reform is today included in the mandate and work of many ongoing peace operations. A number of international, regional and national actors are engaged in work activities with the aim to strengthen the rule of law across the world. Police officers, judges, prosecutors, correctional officers and other legal experts therefore will have an important role in reestablishing the rule of law in post-conflict and developing countries.
Aim
The aim of this course is to give the participants a comprehensive view of rule of law as well as an understanding of programmes and projects needed for the successful development of the rule of law, by analysing different methods and tools for how to work efficiently with rule of law topics. The course will provide the participants with knowledge needed in a rule of law mission, or a rule of law component of a more comprehensive peace mission, as well as practical knowledge necessary for performing well in a crisis environment.
The course will combine practical experiences from the rule of law field, theoretical views, and groundbreaking research. Learning methodology will include lectures, seminars, case studies, and simulations.
