Organisation

The set-up

About 90 people work at the Folke Bernadotte Academy (FBA) in Sweden. The agency consists of three units:

  • Policy, Research and Development
  • Education, Training and Exercises
  • Recruitment and Operational Support

The agency is supported by an administrative unit covering record-keeping, archiving, reporting, planning, coordination, security, human resources, information, management support and IT.

Policy, Research and Development (PRD)

The unit's scope includes conflict-prevention, the development of doctrine and methodology, security sector reform, disarmament, demobilisation and reintegration, rule of law, Good Offices, the administration of Fredsmiljonen (a government grant fund for peace projects and studies) and the secretariat of the International Forum for the Challenges of Peace Operations.

Education, Training and Exercises (ETE)

The unit's primary role is to oversee internal training and exercises. The unit also acts as a civilian-to-military coordinator and handles EU and gender-related issues. In collaboration with the Recruitment and Operational Support unit, ETE offers pre-mission training as well as courses for the international resource pool.

Recruitment and Operational Support

The unit selects, trains, equips and deploys about 90 staff seconded through the FBA to international peace operations, as well as carrying out assessments and return-home programmes for them. In cooperation with PRD, the unit manages a knowledge bank to which staff are encouraged to contribute on their return from missions.
